90% of dry eye come from the eyelids and not the actual eyes themselves; specifically oil glands located inside the top and bottom lids. Without proper quantity and quality of these oil glands the eye’s tear film will not be able to adhere and provide comfort for the eyes. These oil glands are called meibomian glands and the substance secreted by them called the meibum.
The meibum from meibomian glands begins to melt at 95°C-104°C for people who have meibum gland obstruction or otherwise unhealthy glands. When your meibomian glands are obstructed and malnourished, gland dystrophy is inevitable and the glands are permanently damaged. With advanced imaging technology we are able to visualize the actual meibomian glands located inside the eyelids, and target specific areas of the eyelid that need treatment.
The iLux works by being inserted underneath the eyelids where the meibomian glands are located. The device will them heat the lids to the proper temperature to loosen the meibum and stimulate the glands. Finally the device will compress the lids to express the healthy oils through the now unobstructed glands. By using iLux we can help preserve and improve the remaining meibomian glands and create healthier, younger and more comfortable feeling eyes.
We also recommend our in office treatment of Bleph Ex to deep clean the lids as well as the use of blephadex wipes and OcuBliss.
